25th anniversary of .com

On March 15, 1985, Symbolics Computers registered symbolics.com, the very first domain name in the world. Later that same year, 5 other companies registered a domain name. 

Back then, domain names were definitely not as popular as today. It took until 1997 before the one millionth dotcom was registered. Between 1985 and 2000, 21 million dotcoms were registered. From 2000 until today, 57 million new dotcoms were added.

1.000.000 .be domain names

In 2009, .be celebrated its 20th birthday. Early this year, the millionth .be domain name has been registered. The Belgian extension remains popular. In 2009, for the 6th year in a row, a record amount of new .be domain names was registered (232,746). That is 4,4% more new registrations than in 2008.

Café.eu, garçon.eu and tête-à-tête.eu will soon be available

On December 10 2009, the landrush will start for .eu domain names with international characters like é, ^, ç, etc. IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) will ascertain that non-Latin characters will also be useable for domain names

1.5 million .fr domain names

On September 10, the 1.5 millionth .fr domain name was registered for a music band (lessecouesduvocal.fr). In 2002, there were merely 100.000 .fr domain names. Previous milestones were 500.000 in July 2006 and 1 million in January 2008
